Conclude your day with a peaceful evening city walk before retiring to the five-star comfort of the Kigali Serena Hotel.

  • Day 2 - Dian Fossey Tomb

Your day begins with an early morning scenic road trip from Kigali to the Volcanoes National Park, an approximate two-and-a-half-hour drive. You will delight in the stunning, verdant landscapes of Rwanda as you travel. Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you will be introduced to your specialised guide and begin the historic trek up the slopes. Hiking through diverse vegetation zones, you will have the chance to encounter unique wildlife as you ascend.
The destination is the poignant final resting place of Dian Fossey. At the site, you can explore the preserved remains of her original Karisoke research camp and visit her grave, which lies beside those of some of her favorite gorillas. After this moving and educational experience, you will descend and check into the Ingagi Park View Lodge for a delicious dinner and a well-deserved, restful overnight stay.

Today is dedicated to the energetic Golden Monkeys. After an early morning briefing at the park headquarters, you will be assigned to a trekking group and receive essential rules and guidelines. From there, we immerse ourselves in the bamboo forest to track these rare, playful, and lively primates. The time spent observing the Golden Monkeys is a truly unforgettable experience in their natural habitat. Following your trek, you will be transferred back to Kigali (approx. 2.5 hours). Time permitting before your departure, you will have the opportunity to browse and shop at various craft centers, allowing you to select authentic Rwandan souvenirs to take home as a memorable keepsake of your adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rwanda allows citizens of all countries to obtain a visa upon arrival without needing to apply in advance. However, fee waivers and stay durations vary by nationality. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie member states receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. Travelers from East African Community (EAC) member states receive a free six-month entry pass. In addition, nationals of a designated group of countries, including Singapore and Qatar, are granted a free 90-day visa on arrival. All other nationalities still qualify for visa on arrival, with fees capped at 50 USD for a single entry or 70 USD for multiple entry, payable online in advance or upon arrival.

The official currency is the Rwandan Franc (Rwf), though US dollars are widely accepted for larger purchases. Expect to pay for everyday local services in cash using Rwandan Francs. For significant amounts, such as gorilla trekking permits and upmarket hotels, US dollars or other hard currencies are usually preferred. A growing number of places also accept credit and debit cards.

Dress codes are informal yet respectful (men typically wear trousers; women are comfortable in knee-length or longer garments). Daytime requires lightweight clothing, a hat, and sunglasses for warm temperatures and sun protection, while a light sweater is necessary for cool evenings. When tracking gorillas or hiking in the national parks, wear protective clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Avoid blue clothing in Akagera National Park as it attracts tse tse flies.

Plastic carry bags and other single-use plastics are banned in Rwanda for environmental reasons. Visitors entering the country with plastic bags will have them confiscated at the point of entry. Only certain approved alternatives (such as authorized compostable or woven-polypropylene bags) are allowed under exceptions granted by the relevant authorities.
