Itinerary
Day 1 - Welcome to St. Lucia
Upon arrival at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, collect your rental vehicle and begin your scenic 2.5-hour drive north along the coast to St. Lucia. This charming town is uniquely positioned between the Indian Ocean and a vast estuary that forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After checking into your accommodation and freshening up, we recommend exploring the town on a guided bicycle tour, a wonderful way to get oriented while enjoying the relaxed coastal atmosphere. As the day winds down, immerse yourself in an authentic cultural experience with a village visit. Here, you will be welcomed by local Zulu families who will share their traditions through energetic dance performances, storytelling, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. You will also have the opportunity to sample local Zulu cuisine, learning about the ingredients and cooking methods that have been passed down through generations. It’s the perfect introduction to the warmth and hospitality of KwaZulu-Natal.

Day 2 - Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Safari & Estuary Cruise
Rise early for one of the highlights of your trip—a guided 4×4 safari through the legendary Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Established in 1895, this is South Africa’s oldest proclaimed game reserve and was created specifically to save the white rhinoceros from extinction. Today, it remains a critical sanctuary for a significant portion of the world’s rhino population; in fact, nearly 90% of all white rhinos alive today can trace their genetic lineage back to this very park. Beyond its rhinos, the park boasts a diversity of wildlife, including the rest of the Big Five and countless other species. Keep your camera ready for unforgettable photography opportunities.
After lunch back in St. Lucia, prepare for a completely different but equally thrilling experience—a leisurely boat cruise on the St. Lucia Estuary. This waterway is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and supports an extraordinary ecosystem. As you glide along the calm waters, you will have excellent opportunities to observe and photograph hippos wallowing in the shallows, massive crocodiles basking on the banks, and an incredible diversity of birdlife, including fish eagles, kingfishers, and pelicans. Your guide will point out the various species and explain the delicate ecological balance of this wetland paradise. The late afternoon light creates perfect conditions for photography as you return to shore.Meals: Breakfast
Day 3 - iSimangaliso Wildlife & Cape Vidal Beach
This morning offers flexibility to suit your family’s interests. You can embark on a self-guided game drive through the eastern shores of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, where you control the pace and can stop wherever wildlife catches your attention. Alternatively, for a truly unique perspective, join a guided horseback safari that allows you to approach wildlife quietly and experience the bush from a completely different vantage point. Your experienced instructor will match horses to riders’ abilities, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced riders. Whichever option you choose, you will traverse diverse habitats including coastal forests, grasslands, and wetlands, each supporting different wildlife communities. By midday, make your way to Cape Vidal, one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. The protected bay features powdery white sand and remarkably clear, warm waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach, building sandcastles with the kids, exploring rock pools, or donning your snorkel gear to discover the underwater wonderland just offshore.

Day 4 & 5 - Safaris in Babanango Reserve
After breakfast, bid farewell to the coast and head inland through the heart of Zululand. The landscape transitions from coastal plains to rolling hills as you drive deeper into the interior. Your destination is the Babanango Reserve, a spectacular 130-hectare malaria-free wilderness area that offers a completely different experience from the coastal region. The reserve is securely fenced, allowing you and your children to explore freely while still experiencing proximity to wildlife in a safe environment. Upon arrival and settling into your accommodation, the next two days are yours to embrace adventure. The reserve’s crown jewel is an exhilarating multi-platform zipline course that spans the canopy, offering heart-pumping thrills alongside breathtaking aerial views of the White Umfolozi River valley below. For those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, there are well-marked hiking trails ranging from easy nature walks to more challenging treks through the bush. An obstacle course provides additional entertainment for energetic kids. As evening approaches, gather around the campfire under star-filled African skies, perhaps spotting wildlife coming to drink at nearby waterholes. The sounds of the bush at night—from the distant roar of lions to the calls of nocturnal birds—create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Day 6-7 - Nambiti Private Game Reserve
Depart Babanango and drive to the renowned Nambiti Private Game Reserve, where you will spend the next two nights in comfortable, family-friendly accommodation. Nambiti has gained an excellent reputation not only for its luxurious lodges but also for its impressive biodiversity across varied landscapes. This malaria-free Big Five reserve is home to lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and both black and white rhinos, along with over 40 other mammal species including cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and numerous antelope species. Your lodge specializes in family safaris and understands the unique needs of traveling with children. Between game drives, kids can enjoy the swimming pool, explore dedicated playgrounds, or participate in supervised activities led by childcare professionals. Over your two-day stay, you will embark on four thrilling game drives, typically two in the late afternoon/evening and two early morning drives. These are the optimal times for wildlife viewing when animals are most active. Your expert ranger will use their years of experience and intimate knowledge of the reserve to position you for extraordinary sightings. All your meals are included during this portion of the trip, with the lodge offering excellent cuisine including child-friendly options. Meals are often served in the traditional boma (outdoor enclosure) under the stars, adding to the authentic safari atmosphere. Share stories of the day’s sightings with fellow guests as you dine, creating connections and memories that last long after the trip ends.

Day 8 - En route to the Drakensberg
Following one last early morning game drive and hearty breakfast at Nambiti, pack up and begin your journey toward the iconic Drakensberg Mountains. This magnificent range stretches for 1,125 kilometers along South Africa’s southeastern border, with peaks soaring to 3,475 meters above sea level. The Zulu name for these mountains is “uKhahlamba,” meaning “barrier of spears,” while Afrikaans settlers called them “Drakensberg” or “Dragon Mountains”—both names reflecting the dramatic, jagged peaks that dominate the skyline. The scenic drive takes you through changing landscapes and traditional rural areas. We highly recommend stopping at Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve, which encompasses 18,000 hectares and offers spectacular panoramic views of the Drakensberg range. The dam’s waters reflect the towering peaks, creating photo opportunities that will be the envy of your friends back home. Upon arrival at your Drakensberg accommodation, take time to settle in and perhaps explore the immediate surroundings. The crisp mountain air is a refreshing change from the warmer coastal climate. Spend the evening planning your next day’s hiking adventure, consulting trail maps and discussing options with your hosts who can recommend routes suitable for your family’s fitness levels and interests.

Day 9 - Drakensberg Hiking
Wake early to make the most of your day in this mountain paradise. The Drakensberg offers hiking trails for all ability levels, from gentle valley walks to challenging mountain ascents. For fit, adventurous families, the hike to Sentinel Peak via the famous chain ladders is an unforgettable experience. This trail rewards your efforts with stunning views of the Amphitheatre, a five-kilometer-long cliff face that is one of the most photographed geological features in South Africa, and close-up views of Tugela Falls, which plunges 948 meters in five spectacular leaps, making it one of the world’s highest waterfalls. For families with younger children or those preferring a less strenuous option, the trail to Gudu Falls offers equally rewarding scenery without the challenging climb. This beautiful waterfall cascades into a large natural pool that’s perfect for a refreshing swim—a wonderful way to cool off after your hike. The surrounding landscape features unique rock formations, indigenous forests, and grasslands dotted with wildflowers. Ancient San rock art can be found in many caves and overhangs throughout the region, offering glimpses into the lives of the area’s earliest inhabitants who lived here thousands of years ago. After your morning hike, spend the remainder of the day at leisure, perhaps enjoying your lodge’s amenities or taking a shorter nature walk in the area.

Day 10 - Return to Johannesburg
After breakfast, begin your journey back to Johannesburg. The drive takes approximately 5-6 hours, but consider breaking it up with stops at points of interest. The village of Clarens is well worth a visit—this charming artist’s enclave is nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains and features numerous galleries, craft shops, cafés, and restaurants. Just beyond Clarens, you may also drive through Golden Gate Highlands National Park, named for the brilliant golden hues of its sandstone cliffs, especially stunning in the late afternoon sun. The park’s dramatic rock formations and distinctive landscape provide a fitting finale to your journey. Continue to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, arriving with plenty of time to return your rental vehicle, check in for your flight, and reflect on an incredible ten days of family adventures before boarding your onward journey home.
