Upon arrival, a local guide will be waiting to lead you on a fascinating tour of this ancient national monument. The caves are known by their traditional and deeply significant name, “Chirorodziva”, which translates to the “Pool of the Fallen”—a name that hints at the profound history and local legends surrounding this site. Your exploration will take you through a system of winding tunnels and dramatic caverns, from the mesmerizing, sunlit Sleeping Pool to the depths of the artificially lit Dark Cave. The Sleeping Pool is a truly breathtaking sight, with unbelievably vibrant blue and crystal-clear water that seems to glow from within. Mysteriously, this pool defies meteorological logic, maintaining a constant temperature of 22-degrees Celsius every single day of the year, a phenomenon your guide will be happy to explain. Peer into its depths, and you’ll see flashes of goldfish navigating the pristine waters. The area serves as a corridor for wildlife accessing the water, but large mammals are not found within the recreational park. Visitors can spot smaller land animals like baboons, rock hares, and bushpigs. The cave water is home to various species such as bottle fish, bream, catfish, and goldfish, especially visible while diving. The surrounding vegetation is excellent for birdwatching, offering sightings of species like the Arnot’s chat, bat hawk, flycatcher, woodpeckers, and redwing.

Yes, diving is available year-round, offering incredible sights. The water temperature and visibility remain constant, rewarding divers with abundant sightings of goldfish and other freshwater species.

Comfortable, non-slip walking shoes and practical clothing are essential. The trail leading down to the pool includes steep steps. Visitors must have a moderate level of fitness for this section. The incredible views, however, make the climb worthwhile.

The US Dollar (USD) is the dominant and most widely accepted currency.

Prices for tourists are usually quoted in USD. Have small denominations ($1s, $5s, $10s) for tips and local markets. The local currency (ZWL) is less useful for tourists. Credit/Debit Cards (Mastercard/Visa) are widely accepted at major hotels and activity operators.

The most famous and highly recommended cultural experience is The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show, located in the Zimbabwe. This immersive cultural evening features a four-course African buffet that includes game meats, sadza, and vegetarian options. Entertainment includes performances by traditional dancers, an interactive drumming lesson for all guests, and the opportunity to try a Mopane Worm to earn a “bravery certificate.”
For other authentic local options, visitors can look for eateries such as Dusty Road Township Experience, which offers a homely meal cooked on an open fire in the local Chinotimba township, or Zulu Bristo.
