Your journey into Zimbabwe’s rich past begins this morning with a pickup from your hotel, followed by a scenic 24-kilometer drive from Bulawayo. Your destination is the Khami World Heritage Site, a truly magnificent monument that once served as the capital of the Torwa dynasty. This powerful state emerged from the collapse of the Great Zimbabwe Kingdom, flourishing between 1450 and 1650 before its eventual abandonment during the Ndebele incursions of the 19th century. Upon arrival, your exploration will take you through the heart of Khami, where a series of intricately terraced stone ruins, often highly decorated, dominate the landscape. You will first encounter the largest of these structures, a monumental complex with three-tiered platforms that once served as the exclusive home of the King and his royal family. The imposing front façade of this platform still stands, marking what was once the main entrance to power. Your tour will continue as you discover other key areas of this sprawling ancient city. You will see the mysterious Cross Ruin, distinguished by its unique stone Dominican Cross, a detail that continues to fascinate historians. You will also learn about the Northern Platform, which once bustled with activity as a key site for gold processing. We will proceed to the Precipice Ruin, which served as a significant ritual center and is home to the longest decorated stonewall of its kind, a testament to the artistry of its builders. You will also explore the nearby Passage Ruin, a series of two semicircular platforms connected by a narrow, intriguing passageway. Following your extensive tour of these magnificent ruins, you will be served a well-deserved light lunch, offering a moment to relax and reflect on the incredible history you have just explored.
